3rd Shift Quality Control Technician

Des Moines, Iowa Full-Time Manufacturing

Position Summary

We are seeking a 3rd Shift Quality Control Technician to inspect structural steel parts and assemblies during pre-fabrication and post-fabrication, and to maintain formal documentation of all quality occurrences for improvement and training. The shop is located about 5 minutes from Southridge Mall in Des Moines.

Reports to: Quality Control Supervisor

Key Responsibilities

Quality Control & Inspection

  • Become proficient in AWS D1.1 welding standards.
  • Conduct and document pre-fabrication and post-fabrication inspections.
  • Maintain documentation of shop drawing corrections, tape measure calibration, mill tester calibration, and stud welding tests.
  • Mark products with identification and appropriate visual markings per QC documentation.
  • Inform management of any product nonconformity or equipment issues.

Collaboration & Culture

  • Work closely with management and production personnel to meet and exceed product quality.
  • Assist in building a shop-floor culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Demonstrate reliability through exceptional attendance.
  • Follow 5S organizational methodology and perform housekeeping responsibilities.
  • Support safety and production programs.

Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Blueprint reading and interpretation, including section and projected views of 2D drawings.
  • Comprehension of AWS weld callouts.
  • GMAW (MIG) welding experience — minimum 6+ months in flat and horizontal positions; FCAW (flux core) a plus.
  • General use of hand and power tools: angle grinder, hammers, chisels, pry bars, clamps.
  • Layout tools: tape measure, squares, bevel squares, levels (accurate within 1/16").
  • Safe operation of an oxy/fuel cutting torch on material from 1/4" to 1" thickness.
  • Forklift experience and overhead crane operation are a plus.
  • Basic math and computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s degree in a technical field or higher preferred but not required.
  • Two or more years in the structural steel industry or a related welding/fabrication industry.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and work long hours.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to crawl on hands and knees and climb a ladder.
  • May occasionally work in conditions that include high heat, rain, snow, and ice.
